2019 International Symposium on Corpus Linguistics Held at the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology
From October 25 to 27, 2019, the 2019 International Symposium on Corpus Linguistics: An Interdisciplinary Perspective was held at the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology (USST). The symposium was jointly hosted by the Corpus Linguistics Society of China (CLSC) and USST. More than 200 participants from China and abroad attended the event.
With the theme of "An Interdisciplinary Perspective," the symposium focused on the current development, emerging issues, and broad applications of corpus linguistics.
The symposium featured keynote speeches by leading scholars in the field, including Professor Wolfgang Teubert, former Director of the Centre for Corpus Linguistics at the University of Birmingham; Professor Mark Davies, creator of one of the world's largest online corpus platforms; and prominent Chinese scholars such as Naixing Wei, Maocheng Liang, Anping He, Wenzhong Li, Jianzhong Pu, and Jiajin Xu. Their presentations highlighted cutting-edge achievements in corpus linguistics and explored future directions for interdisciplinary collaboration.
In the parallel sessions, participants engaged in lively discussions on topics such as interdisciplinary applications of corpora, corpus and foreign language teaching, corpus and ESP, corpus and discourse analysis, and corpus-based contrastive studies and translation. These discussions addressed the development of corpus linguistics in the era of big data and artificial intelligence, emphasizing technological innovation, interdisciplinary research, and collaboration in support of China's national language strategy.
The symposium also included three pre-conference workshops, in which Professors Jiajin Xu, Wenzhong Li, and Mark Davies demonstrated the use of data and technology in corpus research from different perspectives.
